Notes on V belts
Every engine is affected by an individual range of factors: humidity, cleaning agents, heat and cold, to name just a few examples. At the same time, the ribbed belt now also plays an increasingly important role in today’s cars and vans. More and more auxiliary units, and therefore also more safety-related systems, are now driven with the help of the ribbed belt and its components.
With today’s quality products, made to the highest standards with materials such as EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber), it is impossible to reliably check the actual wear and tear of a ribbed belt without the use of tools. This means that the wear limit can be exceeded without anyone noticing, and nothing can be done to prevent this. Therefore a regular check system has to be applied to the car engine.
Replacement intervals
Multi V belts are subject to aging and wear. They therefore have to be regularly checked and replaced. The checking and replacement intervals are always specified by the vehicle manufacturer and must be complied with.
New engine design is putting an increasing emphasis on space saving. Small pulley diameters necessitating thin, flexible belts are often the result. Being extremely elastic and dimensionally stable, BURG GERMANY ribbed belts can adapt to the respective drive geometry.
Preventing serious damages
Multi V belt condition should be inspected as a precautionary measure during servicing in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. Irregularities are then identified in good time. If the Multi V belt slips or faces misalignments when installed, it may tear apart. As a result the engine heat system or electrical or power steering system may fail proper functioning and cause serious problems. To avoid that, a belt should be changed under the following circumstances:
- The maximum lifetime has been reached
- The belt is damaged/worn
It is recommended to change the whole belt system ( tensioner and idler) as a kit since all moving parts are subjected to the same time caused the main bel malfunctioning.
